The other day, I was browsing through some articles on the Business of Fashion. Surprisingly, I discovered an interview with Editor-in -Chief of Vogue Italia, Franca Sozzani who touched on putting life before work. This of course, set my balance radar off!
In the interview Franca talks about changes happening in the fashion industry among creative directors of luxury brands. She was asked to comment on the departure of Raf Simons from Dior, who stepped down from the brand, in order to put his life first.
In recent years, Raf has become the creative director for Dior, designing timeless pieces. Raf has poured his life into the brand, working vigorously and meticulously to ensure his ideas are executed according to his vision. Upholding a brand like Dior, needless to say, he had a lot riding on his shoulders.

It grabbed my attention that someone who holds a coveted position at a luxury brand would consider stepping away from it all, for the sake his personal life. His choice communicates to me that no matter where you are in your life or career, it’s necessary to take time out for yourself and recharge your batteries in order to be effective.
Interestingly enough, Franca says she’s never seen work life balance in the fashion industry. Still, she praises the ambition of the younger generation for fighting for it; choosing between personal goals and professional goals. She believes that you have to make a choice and set your priorities. In her life, she chose to make her son a priority.
It makes me happy to see that work life balance is acknowledged in a fast pace industry such as fashion.
So let me ask you, what does a quality life mean to you? What are your priorities?
